Why family law?

My first impression of a family law court was not a good one.  I once witnessed the biggest miscarriage of justice I have ever heard of in a family law court when my Mom’s friend was divorcing her husband.  My Mom’s friend ( lets call her Jane) was divorcing her husband (let’s call him Jon) in a small town in central Texas.  Jane was a great lady who decided to divorce after discovering that her husband had been having a full-blown affair with another woman and he was leaving her for the mistress.  To make matters worse, Jon decided that he wanted full custody of the kids (3 girls), he wanted Jane to pay child support, and he wanted to keep the house. Needless to say, this divorce was not friendly.

I had known Jane for years and I knew her to be a great person and an excellent parent.  I can’t remember all the facts of the case but I do remember going to court during their trial and hearing Jon lie multiple times on the stand.  Jon lied so well on the stand that the court believed his case and the Judge didn’t give Jane the ability to properly refute everything that John was saying.  The trial was pathetic.  John ended up getting the house, the kids and the majority of the community estate.  Jane was devastated and left without much to her name.  This is when I decided to look into family law after I graduated from law school.  I enjoy helping my clients through this difficult time in their lives. I enjoy seeing the parties satisfied with the outcome of their case.  I wish I could have been there to help Jane.
